This tour is fun, educational and interactive.

The Marlborough Sounds were formed when Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator, chased a giant octopus and finally caught it in Cook Strait. The battle that ensued formed the waterways and headlands of the Marlborough Sounds.

This tour gives you a rare opportunity to retrace the footsteps and legends of Kupe and local Maori, by being guided through the inner part of the Queen Charlotte Sounds to explore this beautiful piece of paradise.

Departing from Picton, we will guide you on a journey learning local Maori history through storytelling. You will visit Kaipupu Point, a sounds wildlife sanctuary, where you will go for a short bush walk in the regenerated native forest. Our guide will share Maori values and knowledge of practices such as Kaitiakitanga (Maori way of guardianship) and Rongoa Maori (Maori medicinal plants).

You will then travel to Double Cove to feed the pet fish and discover how Maori used to tame various animals as pets and guardians. Then take a short journey over to Mistletoe Bay Eco Village where you will participate in a cultural activity (such as flax weaving, traditional Maori instruments or Maori weaponry), sample Maori tea, take another short bush walk and have time to relax and take in the idyllic surroundings.
